Reputation saved by Bruce Williams

I am still not completely over yesterday's disaster.  So in otherwords it was kind of a success.

I has no fewer than 3 people who know their way around a cookbook tell me lettuce should not be baked.  I whole-heartedly agree.

So by the saving grace of St. Bruce Williams and destiny, today's random recipe looks to redeem itself.  (It is a South Dakota thing.  You will be educated)

I mean 3 sticks of butter cannot be wrong.  And yes there is sour cream... but sour cream and cocoa are kind of a thing with me lately,  It is all good.

Did you know a jumbo muffin pan holds a cup of fluid each cup?  I do now.

Man I am a messy baker... I am going to be pulling cocoa powder out of cracks I didn't know existed.  What is with the clouding by the way.  Is there a form of coal miner's black lung with bakers using cocoa... Jeez

Broke out the Cuisinart.   The cocoa cloud fills the entire kitchen.  Guess I should add a bit more liquid now

I am very glad I am home alone again today.  But both spouse and spawn get to partake.  There will be plenty for everyone.  Found Bruce and his friend Terry on youtube and I am belting out their major hits loud and proud not quite dancing in the cocoa induced haze - does this stuff ever land????

I will be the first to admit.  When I become a world class chef in my 80's I will hire someone to frost cupcakes for me.  But you do not taste pretty.  I do not eat pretty.  And these are not half bad.

Brandy ate hers and has plans of denying A.. one later.

A..  actually got one of 12 and gave me a thumbs up.  Until she got to the white cream center, and ate her way around that...  there is something seriously wrong with that girl.

Me - these are even better with vanilla bean ice cream and cinnamon...  Why did I not think of that at Iona school when I had one of these 3-5 times a week.  

Oh yeah the whole lunch box / Ice cream thing doesn't work well

I just realized I will never get rid of all of my recipes unless I ratchet things up a bit.  My budget is $140 a week (Hey most of it doubles as supper/food/medication, can you say that about your hobbies/distractions)  so I figure I will try to see if I can get up to 12 a week done instead of just 7 as long as they stay in budget after 7. Today worked for a 2-fer Starting with Double Chip Cookies Got to love these community made cookbooks.  This (according to recipe) was ripped off of the Robin Hood flour bag.  It is a basic chocolate chipper with a handful of pb chips to make it a DOUBLE CHIP.  But the instructions. No vanilla or chocolate chips in the ingredients, but listed in the instructions along with dates. Who puts dates in chocolate chip cookies?  nope.  Will improvise on the vanilla but the dates are out. Garden Chowder

It is October, and the farmer's markets are beginning to be limited to gourds and cabbages.  Which isn't a problem per se, but this recipe is about 3 weeks too late.  Thankfully all are available and not overly expensive at HyVee. Had to be careful this time as the spouse is skeletonizing leaves in bicarb in my prep space.  Not sure how alkaline maple leaves would taste in a chowder, but from what I've been able to evade so far in the recipe roulette, it would not be surprising.  From smell alone, maybe pair with a runny cheese. So back to the chowder.  If I follow the advise from the last 5 dietitians that consult with me, it is a little pale.  But it is cream based so, stick it ladies, it is going to be pale. Dished up it looks a bit better (strategically ground pepper to contrast...) and yes in our house we each get a mini-loaf of bread with any soup...  Dr. Atkins can rot in his grave. scalloped ham and corn casserole

I finally get some food. Don't get me wrong, I always appreciate a good nightcap, but I was running low on leftovers. This one could be interesting.  It is too simple.  So simple of course I get myself in trouble not reading directions.  Want to get the food done by 730, cooks for an hour.  So brain says start at 6:15. Except reading more closely once I started, it called for 3 cups of "cooked" potatoes.  Well looks like we will be eating DURING the Godzilla marathons tonight.  (Cheesy movies take priority).  I can live with that. Well other than that there was no complications.  And you end up with this trust me there is ham and corn in there somewhere. This is a completely edible concoction, actually quite good, except both Brandy and I were torn. We couldn't help thinking we should pan fry and add a poached egg on top of this hash.
